Captioning 101

Real-time captioning is used for live programs, such as news and sporting events, or programs that are produced very close to air time. Captions appear in the "roll-up" mode, scrolling at the bottom or top of the screen. Learn more...

Offline captioning is used for pre-recorded programs that air from videotape or are duplicated for distribution on videotape or DVD. Captions can be displayed in either "pop-on" or "roll-up" modes. Learn more...

Subtitling is the application of proportionally spaced, high quality text over the video. Unless they're on a DVD, subtitles are permanent and cannot be turned off. Learn more...
